I was part of a team at the Hacking Health hackathon at eHealth's Conference. My team was led by Tamara Daly, a researcher from York University, was focused on the mental health of Long-term care workers. The problem is that these workers are sacrificing their own health to take care of the people in their charge. For each of their shifts, they get a 30-minute lunch break and 15-minute breaks. The problem was that they were unable to take or skipping these 15-minute breaks; hurting their own health and quickly burning out.
The first goal for creating the app was to encourage and facilitate the taking of these missed brakes. One of the challenges with utilizing all of your breaks is finding someone covering your duties while you are taking time for your self. The second challenge is forgetting about your breaks altogether.
The second goal was to make these short breaks more effective by giving them optional activities or exercises to do while on the break to help them maintain mental and physical wellbeing.
